The student will learn the basic concepts relating to Renewable Energy Sources, the appropriate technologies available for heat and power production and their penetration in the conventional energy system.
She will be able to understand the basic principles, to estimate the RES potential and to design and size an appropriate system. She will also be capable to evaluate a RES project on the technological, economic, environmental and social dimension.
Weekly topics: | 1. Introduction to the energy problem, basic concepts of sustainable energy, terms and units used. Economic evaluation of energy investments.
2. Introduction to Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Basic concepts of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. Introduction to RETSCREEN and TRNSYS software. Examples. 3. Heat Transfer. Conduction, convection and radiation mechanisms. Examples. 4. Solar radiation. Basic concepts and estimation of solar potential from meteorological data and simulations. Case study with RETSCREEN software. 5. Solar Energy Applications. (a) Heat production with hot water solar collectors. Calculations with RETSCREEN software. 6. Solar Energy Applications (b) Electricity production with photovoltaic cells and solar power plants. Calculations with RETSCREEN and TRNSYS. 7. Wind Energy. (a) Basic concepts of wind circulation, measurements. Description of wind turbines technology. 8. Wind Energy. (b) Estimation of wind potential in a place with RETSCREEN. Sizing and siting of wind turbines. 9. Wind Energy. (c) Design of wind parks, estimation of environmental pressures. 10. Hydraulic Energy. Basic terms (dams, tides, rivers), measurements and estimation of hydraulic potential. Selection of appropriate hydroturbines and estimation of power production. Estimation of environmental pressures from hydraulic power plants. 11. Geothermal Energy. Basic concepts and origin of geothermal energy. Estimation of geothermal potential and applications for heat and electricity production. Heat pumps. Estimation of environmental pressures. 12. Biomass. Basic concepts and types of biomass. Estimation of biomass potential for heat and electricity production. Management of biomass projects (energy farms) for energy production. Estimation of environmental pressures. 13. Renewable Energy policy issues. Climatic change and the Kyoto Protocol. Implications for RES penetration. |
