In the summer of 2023, a wildfire spread across the Evros region in Northeastern Greece, affecting an area of 94.250 ha. The fire burned for more than 20 days and is considered the largest wildfire recorded to date in both Greece and Europe. The fire affected the famous for its avifauna species National Park of Dadia-Lefkimi-Soufli. The aim of the current study was to assess the effects of fire severity and management interventions applied after fire on the natural regeneration potential of coniferous forests, dominated by Pinus brutia and, to a lesser extent, Pinus nigra. The burned area was classified into severity classes using remote sensing techniques and established methodologies. A significant part of the burned area (37%) experienced high severity burning. An extensive network of 180 sampling sites was established over the areas covered with coniferous forests based on fire severity classes and post-fire management practices applied. Pine regeneration differed significantly among sites with varying fire severity. Sites subjected to high fire severity exhibited the lowest pine seedling densities, whereas sites burned at low and moderate severity showed higher levels of regeneration. Post-fire pine regeneration was higher in sites where dead wood had not been removed, particularly under undisturbed conditions and where wood barriers were applied. In contrast, sites subjected to logging, either alone or in combination with wood barriers, generally exhibited lower seedling densities across fire severity classes. Regarding plant community recovery, regeneration appears to be at satisfactory levels, although it is also strongly influenced by fire severity.
