The basic goals of this course are to familiarize the students with research methods for data collection, processing and analysis and acquaint them with a variety of research tools.

By completion of this course, students will be able to:

use data analytic techniques such as contingency tables, linear regression, and statistical hypothesis tests to investigate practical and theoretical issues related to Environmental Science.

  1. Introduction, course overview, learning outcomes and way of assessment /grading
  2. Scientific research: goals and components. Research Laboratories at the Department of Environment.
  3. Scales of Measurement. Research Question. Research Hypothesis.
  4. Sample, Population, Sampling Methods.
  5. Methods of Data Collection I.
  6. Methods of Data Collection II.
  7. Introduction to Descriptive Statistics.
  8. Using Excel/SPSS for Descriptive Statistics.
  9. Introducing Inferential Statistics.
  10. Confidence intervals , Chi-Square
  11. Confidence intervals and significance tests for correlation and regression
  12. Writing a Research Proposal
  13. Oral Presentation Assignment
